  • 1 1/2 cup sifted icing sugar
  • 60grams cream cheese
  • 1 orange, juiced and rind grated (1 tbs reserved for frosting)
  • 155grams unsalted butter, softened (save 30g soft butter for frosting)
  • 3/4 cup caster sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1tablespoons poppy seeds
  • 1 1/2 cup self-raising flour
  • 1/4 cup milk

Discover our delicious orange and poppy seed cake recipe that will make your day. Bursting with flavour, this treat is perfect for any occasion.

Method

Step 1 of 6

Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease 22x11cm loaf tin and line base with baking paper.

Step 2 of 6

Finely grate the zest of the orange then juice. Set aside. Reserve 1 tablespoon of juice for frosting later on. 

Step 3 of 6

Beat butter and sugar with an electric beater until pale and creamy. Whisk in eggs one at a time. Stir in orange rind and poppy seeds.

Step 4 of 6

Fold in flour until well combined. Add milk and orange juice. Stir well.

Step 5 of 6

Pour into the prepared tin. Bake for 4 minutes until golden. Test with a skewer. Rest in tin for 5 minutes then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely before icing.

Step 6 of 6

Beat sifted icing sugar, soft butter, and cream cheese together until smooth to create the frosting. Add 1 tbs of reserved orange juice and mix until frosting is creamy. Spread over cooled cake. Cut into slices to serve.
Instruction tip

Tip: You can also use the batter to make delicious muffins but reduce the cook time to 25-30 minutes.
