Description

Make someone's day with these adorable bento cakes. Take a store-bought cake and turn it into something spectacular and memorable with this easy cake hack.

Method

Step 1 of 5

Using an 8cm round cookie cutter or glass as a guide, cut 2 rounds from each sponge cake (see Tip).

Step 2 of 5

Reserve 2/3 cup frosting, then divide remainder among 4 small bowls. Tint 1 portion pale purple, 1 portion pale blue, 1 portion pale teal and leave the remaining portion plain.

Step 3 of 5

Using a palette knife, spread top and side of 1 cake with purple frosting. Set aside. Using a clean palette knife, spread top and side of a second cake with blue frosting. Sprinkle top edge of cakes with 100s and 1000s. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Step 4 of 5

Using a clean palette knife, spread top and side of third cake with teal frosting. Spoon 1/4 cup reserved plain frosting into a piping bag fitted with a small petal-shaped nozzle. Using picture as a guide, pipe frosting onto cake to form flowers. Tint 1 tbs of remaining plain frosting with yellow colouring. Spoon into a snap-lock bag and snip off 1 corner. Pipe onto flowers to create the centre of the flowers. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Step 5 of 5

Using a clean palette knife, spread top and side of remaining cake with plain frosting. Tint remaining reserved plain frosting with pink colouring. Place pink frosting in a piping bag fitted with a 2mm plain nozzle, then pipe ‘X’ and ‘O’ over top of cake. Serve cakes.
