- 570grams wholemeal flour
- 50grams caster sugar (or white sugar)
- 4tablespoons olive oil
- 4tablespoons baking powder
- 1 pinch salt
- 600milliliter buttermilk
Description
This is a family favourite traditional Irish bread, perfect for soups, salads, cheese, breakfast, lunch or dinner. Simple to make and versatile.
Method
Step 1 of 5
Preheat oven to 180° (with fan). Put all the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix well.
Step 2 of 5
Add the buttermilk and oil and mix for a few minutes until the mixture has the consistency of a thick porridge.
Step 3 of 5
Pour the mix into a greased baking tin or silicone mold evenly and sprinkle the top with coarse brown flour/wholemeal.

When oven is ready place the loaf and bake for 50 minutes.
Step 5 of 5
Once baked remove loaf and place upside down on a cooling rack covered with a damp tea towel or cloth (damp not wet).
Allow the loaf 20 minutes to rest before serving.
