Description
There’s no need to miss out on fresh fruits in autumn or winter; try them warm with a sweet syrup.
Method
Step 1 of 5
Place the sugar in a medium, heavy-based pan and add 300ml of water. Place over a medium-low heat to dissolve the sugar. When it has all completely dissolved, increase the heat and bring it to the boil, then reduce the heat once more and simmer for 10 minutes.
Step 2 of 5
Add the wine, orange zest and juice, and cinnamon stick to the pan and bring to the boil.
Step 3 of 5
Reduce the heat and add the pears and plums. Cover and simmer over a medium heat for 10 minutes, or until the fruit is tender (test by piercing a big piece with a knife; it should meet no resistance). Stir in the orange slices.
Step 4 of 5
Carefully remove the fruit from the pan using a slotted spoon, taking as little liquid as possible with the pieces, and set aside in a serving dish.
Step 5 of 5
Boil the syrup over a high heat for 10 minutes to reduce it; it should thicken slightly. Remove the cinnamon stick from the syrup and pour it over the fruit. Serve warm or at room temperature.
