  • 1/4 cup plain flour
  • 2tablespoons Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 free range egg, lightly beaten
  • 2/3 cup sesame seeds
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/3 cup sweet chilli sauce
  • 1/2 lime, juiced
  • 2teaspoons dried chilli flakes

Description

Chinese five-spice powder turns tofu into a party staple in these cubs of delight, which are served with a homemade chilli honey.

Method

Step 1 of 5

Pat tofu dry with paper towel and cut into 12 pieces.

Step 2 of 5

In three separate bowls, place flour and spice powder, egg and sesame seeds. One at a time, toss tofu in flour mixture, dip in egg, then press into sesame seeds to lightly coat. Place on a large plate.

Step 3 of 5

Heat oil in a large, deep non-stick frying pan over high heat. Shallow-fry tofu, in batches, for 1 minute each side or until golden brown. Transfer to paper towel to drain.

Step 4 of 5

Meanwhile, combine honey, sweet chilli sauce, lime juice and chilli in a small saucepan. Stir over low heat for 2 minutes to infuse flavours. Remove from heat. Cool (mixture will thicken).

Step 5 of 5

Arrange tofu on a serving board. Drizzle with half of the chilli honey. Place the remaining chilli honey in a bowl and serve with small skewers.
