Instruction tip
Cooking tip:
To test your icing thickness, spread some icing on a bun. If you want a thinner icing, add more water to your icing mixture until desired thickness is achieved.

Method

Step 1 of 4

Place yeast and sugar in a small bowl with 1 cup warm water. Whisk with a fork until yeast dissolves. Set aside in a warm place for 10 minutes or until frothy.

Step 2 of 4

Sift flour into a large bowl. Stir in salt, yeast mixture and oil to form a soft dough. Turn onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 10 minutes or until smooth and elastic. (Alternatively, mix dough in a standing mixer using a dough hook attachment.) Place in a large, lightly greased bowl. Cover and set aside in a warm place for 1 hour or until dough has doubled in size.

Step 3 of 4

Preheat oven to 200°C/180°C fan-forced. Grease 2 large baking trays with extra oil. Divide dough evenly into 10 portions. Roll each portion into a 12cm-long log. Divide logs evenly between trays, placing logs 2cm apart on each tray. Cover with a damp tea towel. Set aside in a warm place for 30 minutes or until dough has almost doubled in size. Bake, swapping trays halfway through, for 20 minutes or until buns are light golden. Transfer to a wire rack set over a rimmed tray to cool completely.

Step 4 of 4

Place icing sugar, butter and 2 tbs warm water in a bowl. Stir until smooth, adding a little more water if necessary (see tip). Use pink gel to tint sugar mixture pale pink. Spread icing over buns. Sprinkle buns with hundreds and thousands. Set aside to set. Serve.
