  • 4teaspoons sesame seeds
  • 1tablespoons cornflour
  • 1teaspoons sesame oil
  • 4 bunch bok choy
  • 2 mandarins
  • 4 cm piece ginger
  • 2 cup salt-reduced beef stock
  • 2 red onions
  • 1teaspoons dried chilli flakes
  • 2kilograms corned beef
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup Chinese cooking wine
  • 2 large garlic cloves

Learn how to cook corned beef, and try this Asian-inspired twist on a slow cooker corned beef recipe.

Method

Step 1 of 5

Place onion, ginger, garlic and chilli flakes into a 6-litre slow cooker. Heat oils together in a small pan over medium heat until hot. Pour into cooker over onion mixture and stir to coat.

Step 2 of 5

Pat beef dry with paper towel. Rub well with five spice powder. Place into cooker on top of onions.

Step 3 of 5

Peel 1 mandarin, divide into segments and shred the peel. Juice remaining mandarin and combine with hoisin, stock and cooking wine in a jug. Pour into cooker around beef. Add mandarin segments and scatter peel over beef. Cover and cook on high setting for 4 hours or until beef is tender.

Remove beef from cooker and cover to keep warm. Strain liquid into a saucepan. Mix cornflour with 1 tbs water until smooth. Add to sauce and bring to a simmer over medium- high heat. Cook for 5 minutes or until thickened.

Step 5 of 5

Serve beef with sauce and bok choy topped with sesame seeds.
