Our farmers in South Australia

Jamie Nietschke Family

The Barossa Valley

Our family farm is located in the Moppa district at the northern end of the Barossa Valley, SA. Jamie and Annaliese manage the farm with assistance from 3 employees and Jamie’s semi-retired parents John & Neadra. Our two children are also starting to get involved, as farm kids do. From the 90Ha run down property John bought 50 years ago our property has grown to a productive 440Ha. As was traditional in the Barossa we still run a mixed farm, now with two main enterprises of dairy and vineyard, supporting both the wine and food culture of our world renowned wine region.

We are milking over 200 cows, every day of the year, in an efficient 30 unit rotary dairy. Our cows graze green pasture when available. All pasture and fodder is grown from natural rain fall only. We use a combination of conventional and biological practises to create our own manageable system which is ethically, environmentally and economically sustainable. To reduce our carbon footprint we have installed energy saving equipment in the dairy as well as solar panels. We run a mixed herd with 3 breeds of dairy cows: Holstein, Jersey and Aussie Red, which ensures our milk is high in components and so rich and creamy. This is perfect for Farmers Own.

Gary and Ros Zweck

The Barossa Valley

Gary and Ros Zweck along with their adult children Justin, Kelly, Emily & Madeline own a dairy farm at Blyth which is north-west of the Clare Valley, 140kms north of Adelaide in South Australia.

Establishing the dairy stud ‘Donava’ in 1970 which has grown to become the main part of our farming enterprise developing from a mixed farm over 3 generations and now produces 2 million litres of quality Farmers Own milk. We milk just over 200 Holstein Friesian cows all year round. We grow and harvest crops of wheat, barley, oats and vetch on our 700 hectare property and with the technical advice from our agronomist and nutritionist this enables us to fully feed our cows.

We currently employ 2 full time workers who both have young families to help us with the daily running of the dairy farm. Blyth is a small community with big spirit and the whole family enjoys being involved in activities and sports within the town. We are committed dairy farmers who focus on running our family farm to produce quality milk for Farmers Own.

Andrew and Angela Koch

The Barossa Valley

Andrew and Angela Koch and their three daughters, Ashleigh, Taylah and Courtney live in the Barossa Valley on 800 acres (324ha). We milk our 220 cows, 24 at a time through a herringbone dairy. We enjoy working on our picturesque, undulating farm, with the North Para River running through it and large red gums. At Glenunga it’s all about the cows. We don’t have a whole lot of fancy technology and loads of computer generated reports. We love the cows and give them every opportunity to thrive.

Angela feeds the calves and does the bookwork. Andrew breeds and manages the herd and farm, with the three girls taking an ever increasing role in the dairy. Partnering with Woolworths and the Farmers’ Own Brand has helped us look after our cows even better. With the consumers support of the Farmers’ Own Brand we plan to expand our Jersey (the little brown cows) proportion of the herd so we can produce even creamier milk with great taste for the consumer. Our family enjoy showing our cows at the Royal Adelaide Show and several other South Australian Shows. We have milked cows on our farm for three generations and have never felt as connected to the consumer as we do now.
