Committed to reducing food waste

Reducing food waste in Australia remains a top priority for Woolworths. Together with our customers, our farmers and our community partners, we’re working to keep good food out of landfill and ensure that we become Australia’s most sustainable grocer.

Here’s what we are doing:

Reducing food waste in store

Getting the right amount of quality fresh food from farms to our stores and onto the tables of our customers, in its best condition, has a significant impact on reducing food waste in Australia.

Our 'Food Rescue and Recycling Program' helps our stores better identify and divert surplus fresh food away from landfill, and instead use it for alternatives such as hunger relief, as animal stock feed at local farms and zoos, or for commercial composting.

100% of our stores now have a program to keep food out of landfill.

Hunger Relief

By working closely with our food rescue partners OzHarvest, Foodbank and FareShare, we divert surplus edible food from hundreds of stores, and make it available for local hunger relief agencies.

Working in partnership with our hunger relief partners we are helping to provide more than 20 million nourishing meals each year for Australians who may otherwise go without.

The Odd Bunch

To support local farmers and help reduce food waste, we’ve created The Odd Bunch. The Odd Bunch are fruit and vegetables that may not be as good looking, but are just as beautiful on the inside. Since its launch in 2015, more than 40% of our customers have purchased from the range and more than 115,000 tonnes of fruit and vegetables have been sold, which might have otherwise been wasted.

Woolworths Stock Feed for Farmers Program

We work with local farmers so that surplus food, which cannot go to hunger relief, is used as stock feed for animals or for on-farm composting. This helps us further reduce and re-purpose bakery and produce waste.

Food Recycling

We have a number of food recycling programs that we either operate ourselves or have involvement in. This includes composting, worm farms and programs where food waste is turned into fertiliser and green energy.
