Thanks! You’re part of the 80 percent of Woolworths customers who already use their own shopping bags. You’re walking a little gentler on the planet each time you shop. When you do need a reusable bag, we have a range available in store and online.
Discover the latest Art Bag range, designed in collaboration with artist and Gudanji/Wakaja woman, Ryhia Dank. These lightweight, durable totes are the second series of reusable bags designed by Australian artists for Woolworths.
Choose from three artworks that celebrate seasonality, food and
community. Ryhia draws inspiration from family – the stories they told
and the places they travelled since the beginning. “For Gudanji, our
big story is about three women who came from the ocean near Ngukurr in
the Gulf of Carpentaria. They travelled a long way and then created
our place, the hills and fresh water Country.” Ryhia calls her
storying ‘Nardurna’, meaning ‘woman’.
Equal parts art and practical, the bags have a large carrying capacity
and an extra long strap, making them great for big shops and small
shops alike. The entire Art Bag range is made using at least 90 per
cent recycled plastics but they do more than carry your groceries.
Woolworths is proud to announce that 20c from every reusable Art Bag
sold in store or online goes to the
Woolworths Group Foundation1 to support community
needs in times of crisis. For further details about the charities and
communities supported, visit the
Woolworths Group Foundation’s website.

Frequently Asked Questions
In June 2023, we phased out our 15c plastic bags from our Woolworths and Woolworths Metro stores. Our online plastic bags were phased out in December 2023.
Removing plastic bags from stores and online has seen more than 9,000 tonnes of plastic removed from circulation annually across the country.
We don't sell or use biodegradable plastic shopping bags for a few reasons. Biodegradable plastics break down at different rates depending on their composition, how they are disposed of and where. The biodegrable plastics may also break down into smaller parts during the process of biodegradation, which may be mistakenly ingested by animals if not disposed of in appropriate locations. Also, due to their degradable nature, some biodegradable plastics may not be accepted for or suitable for recycling.
Removing single-use plastic bags and 15c reusable plastic bags at the checkout is an important first step. But we’re not stopping there. We've introduced reusable mesh fruit and veg bags that customers can purchase in all stores, and we're supporting the use of compostable fruit and vegetable bags in regions where there is widespread access to kerbside composting facilities, such as in South Australia.
Unfortunately, as of 9 November 2022, the REDcycle soft plastics recycling program is unavailable at Woolworths and Metro stores. REDcycle is no longer operational.
This means soft plastics products (e.g. plastic bags) and products with soft plastics packaging that are labelled with return to store recycling guidance cannot be returned to Woolworths' stores at present.
Woolworths, as part of the Soft Plastics Taskforce, is working with other supermarket retailers, the industry and the Government to find a solution to recommence soft plastic recycling.
We are disappointed by the current unavailability of soft plastics recycling and sincerely apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused. We continue to remain committed to the reduction of soft plastics and finding a solution.
Absolutely! For Pick up & Direct to Boot orders you can select a ‘BYO bags’ option at checkout. With this option, we’ll pack your order directly into a shopping trolley for you to pick up in-store, or for us to deliver direct to your boot. You can then re-pack your groceries into your own bags. Please note that for food safety reasons, some products will continue to be packed into produce or reusable bags.
