Thanks! You’re part of the 80 percent of Woolworths customers who already use their own shopping bags. You’re walking a little gentler on the planet each time you shop. When you do need a reusable bag, we have a range available in store and online.
Our Art Bag range – designed by fresh, Australian artists and made using at least 70 per cent
recycled material – does more than just carry your groceries.
The bags have been designed to give back to Australian communities and this year
20c from every reusable Art Bag sold at Woolworths goes to the Yothu Yindi Foundation, to help
support the education of Yolngu students in northeast Arnhem Land, NT.
The first range of Art Bags have been designed in collaboration with Warumungu/Wombaya woman Jessica
Johnson, the founder of creative agency Nungala Creative. Jessica’s colourful designs celebrate the
joy of fresh food and connection to the land. Jessica said: I was super excited to have the
opportunity to create the artwork for the range of bags for the fresh food people. Food is
life! It’s at the centre of almost everything I do, playing the lead role during the good times
and bad. It can provide a great little bit of escapism and take you on a journey! Food really is
my happy place! You know life is good when you’re eating well. Through some recent struggles
with health issues I have a better understanding of my body's relationship with food. Eating
well is so necessary for the mind, body and spirit. It’s the catalyst in coming together for mob
in my life. The artwork itself is an expression of that joy of eating. We call it the food
dance! It’s like an uncontrollable happiness that turns into a little groove in anticipation of
chowing down. Each bag has its own flavour but is essentially a celebration of food in its own
unique way.
Woolworths is authorised to fundraise on behalf of the Yothu Yindi Foundation until 31 December 2024. 20 cents from the sale of each reusable Art Bag in Woolworths’ stores this year will be donated by Woolworths to the Yothu Yindi Foundation towards the development of education programs for Yolngu students in northeast Arnhem Land, NT.

Frequently Asked Questions
In June 2023, we phased out our 15c plastic bags from our Woolworths and Woolworths Metro stores. Our online plastic bags were phased out in December 2023.
Removing plastic bags from stores and online has seen more than 9,000 tonnes of plastic removed from circulation annually across the country.
We don't sell or use biodegradable plastic shopping bags for a few reasons. Biodegradable plastics break down at different rates depending on their composition, how they are disposed of and where. The biodegrable plastics may also break down into smaller parts during the process of biodegradation, which may be mistakenly ingested by animals if not disposed of in appropriate locations. Also, due to their degradable nature, some biodegradable plastics may not be accepted for or suitable for recycling.
Removing single-use plastic bags and 15c reusable plastic bags at the checkout is an important first step. But we’re not stopping there. We've introduced reusable mesh fruit and veg bags that customers can purchase in all stores, and we're supporting the use of compostable fruit and vegetable bags in regions where there is widespread access to kerbside composting facilities, such as in South Australia.
Unfortunately, as of 9 November 2022, the REDcycle soft plastics recycling program is unavailable at Woolworths and Metro stores. REDcycle is no longer operational.
This means soft plastics products (e.g. plastic bags) and products with soft plastics packaging that are labelled with return to store recycling guidance cannot be returned to Woolworths' stores at present.
Woolworths, as part of the Soft Plastics Taskforce, is working with other supermarket retailers, the industry and the Government to find a solution to recommence soft plastic recycling.
We are disappointed by the current unavailability of soft plastics recycling and sincerely apologise to our customers for any inconvenience caused. We continue to remain committed to the reduction of soft plastics and finding a solution.
Absolutely! For Pick up & Direct to Boot orders you can select a ‘BYO bags’ option at checkout. With this option, we’ll pack your order directly into a shopping trolley for you to pick up in-store, or for us to deliver direct to your boot. You can then re-pack your groceries into your own bags. Please note that for food safety reasons, some products will continue to be packed into produce or reusable bags.
As part of our Art Bag partnership program, we're partnering with the Yothu Yindi Foundation in 2023 to support the education of Yolngu students in Northeast Arnhem land, NT.
The Yothu Yindi Foundation is one of Australia’s leading not-for-profit organisations, representing the interests of Yolngu clan groups in northeast Arnhem Land, and staging the annual Garma Festival. The Foundation’s mission is for Yolngu and other Indigenous people to have the same level of wellbeing and life opportunities as non-Indigenous Australians.
