Unboxing your seedling kit

It’s time to get growing. Inside your exciting Woolworths Discovery Garden cardboard sleeve, you’ll find a biodegradable seed mat, a coco pellet, a compostable pot and a cardboard plant tag. All it takes are these simple ingredients to start growing something special.

Getting started with your Discovery Garden

Watch the video below or follow the simple steps for tips on planting your seedlings.

  • Step 1

In addition to your Woolworths Discovery Garden kit, you’ll need a pair of gloves, a mask, a saucer and some water. On a flat and sturdy surface, place everything in front of you, within comfortable reach.

  • Step 2

With your mask and gloves on, place the coco pellet on the saucer and pour 35ml of water on top of it. Watch it expand before your eyes! Once risen, separate the coco pellet with your fingers.

  • Step 3

Put three-quarters of the separated coco pellet in your pot, then place your seed mat on top. Next, top up your pot with the remaining coco pellet and press it down gently.

Remember, each seeding is unique. It can take up to three weeks from unpacking your seedling to see the first signs of sprouting. Sit tight!

Tips

Your Woolworths Discovery Garden cornflowers need darkness to germinate, so cover the seed with 1cm of the coco pellet. Make sure the coco pellet is well drained and kept moist with regular watering. After repotting, in about 3 months, you’ll be able to enjoy beautiful blue cornflowers.

Unboxing FAQs

Find the answers to all of your gardening questions below.

  • Seed Mat - a small number of seeds of the same seed species e.g. thyme or carrot, are embedded in paper
  • Coco pellet - The coco peat substrate pod is made from the coconut husk. This is a natural product.
  • Pot - a small seedling pot for putting the growing pellet and seeds into
  • Plant name tag - a coloured cardboard label that will identify what’s growing in each pot
  • The collector tray has been specifically designed to hold 24 seedling pots and is available to purchase for $4 from Woolworths (while stocks last, limit of 5 per person per transaction). Or put the pot on a clean saucer and in a light, warm place.
  • Check the coco pellet in the morning and at night to ensure it’s not too dry. Try to keep the coco pellet just moist all the time.
  • Once a little plant appears, a seed has germinated!
  • After germination you can find instructions on the inside of the Woolworths Discovery Garden seedling cardboard wrapper or at woolworths.com.au/discoverygarden.
  • Make sure you don’t leave your little seedling pot anywhere too damp otherwise you might experience mould or little mushrooms starting to appear during the germination process. Mould is caused by fungi that is commonly found in the environment, and grows best when there’s moisture in the air. You can wipe it away with a tissue.
  • Each seedling kit comes in a cardboard wrapper with useful information and instructions.
  • The seed identifying label is made from cardboard
  • The pot is made of plant fibres
  • The seeds come from a German company that buys quality seeds from around the world.
  • The coco pellet is made of coconut husk.

This year, 21 of the plant varieties are bee-attracting! Aster, Bunching Onion, Carrot, Cabbage, Cherry Tomato, Chives, Cornflower, Lavender, Lemon Balm, Lettuce, Oregano, Phacelia, Poppy, Red Basil, Sage, Salvia, Silverbeet, Spinach, Swan River Dairy, Thyme, Zinnia. Herb and vegetable plants flower at different times and some are harvested before they produce flowers like silverbeet, carrot, lettuce and chives for example. By leaving some of these plants in the ground, they will go to seed and produce bee-friendly flowers (food for bees) or seeds that can be replanted.

No, you don’t need loads of tools to start. A pair of gloves, a mask, a saucer and some water is all you need in the beginning, in addition to your Woolworths Discovery Garden packet. Of course, as your plants grow and your garden expands, you might need some more
