Find your plant a new home

Your seedling has grown from strength to strength and is ready to find a new home! This is the fun and creative part. You’ll need your Woolworths Discovery Garden seedling, some potting mix and a new (and larger) home for your plant. This could be a pot or an upcycled household item.

A step-by-step guide to repotting

Help your plant to thrive in its new home with our guide to repotting. Watch the video or follow the helpful steps below.

  • Step 1

Wearing a mask and a pair of gloves, fill your plant’s new home with soil/potting mix. Leave just a bit of space at the top for your seedling.

  • Step 2

Using your fingers, make a well in the soil and place your seedling in. There’s no need to remove your seedling from the original pot - you can repot the whole lot! Top up with soil/potting mix and ensure the base of your seedling is now completely covered.

  • Step 3

Give your plant a good drink of water.

What does a new home for your plant look like? It could be so many things. From a household container to an empty candle votive or even a shoe, (almost) anything goes!

Repotting tips & tricks

Check out these useful resources for repotting your seedlings inside or outdoors.

  • Step 1

Put gardening gloves on and fill the bottom of your new pot with potting mix. Place your seedling in and lightly pack around it. The compostable pot your plant comes in The pot your plant comes in will break down and the roots can easily grow through it, so there’s no need to remove it.

  • Step 2

Once your potting mix has levelled with the base of your seedling nice and snug, give it a good drink of water with your watering can.

  • Pot size

    Pot size

There is no need to remove your plant from the Woolworths Discovery Garden pot when placing it in a larger pot or the ground. It will break down over time and the roots can easily grow through it. Some plants, such as lettuce, will thrive in small pots. Other plants, such as tomatoes, require large pots (at least 50cm) if they’re not going to be planted out into the garden

  • Soil types

    Soil

There are lots of different types of soil. Potting mix has all the nutrients that plants need and is a great choice for plants that will be grown in pots. If you’re planting straight into the ground, it’s important to loosen the garden bed with a shovel or spade before putting your plant into the ground, and remove any weeds.

  • Weather

    Weather

Weather can really impact the way you repot your plants. Make sure you pay close attention to how hot and cold tolerant your plants are. Some plants, like tomatoes, are not cold tolerant and will not cope with being repotted outside if the weather’s still frosty. It’s best to repot all plants on days of mild weather.

How to keep pesky critters away

  • Use slug and snail bait as directed. You can also make barriers of pine needles, eggshells or even coffee grounds.

  • Slugs and snails will generally come out at night. Head out on damp nights with a torch to remove them.

  • Use bird netting or chicken wire to keep rabbits and birds from munching your plants.

  • You can make domes or cloches (a bell shaped covering) for delicate plants like lettuces – simply cut a large bottle in half and put them over your plant.

Tips

Your Woolworths Discovery Garden cornflowers need darkness to germinate, so cover the seed with 1cm of the coco pellet. Make sure the coco pellet is well drained and kept moist with regular watering. After repotting, in about 3 months, you’ll be able to enjoy beautiful blue cornflowers.

Repotting FAQs

Find the answers to all of your gardening questions below.

If the roots are outgrowing the pot, it’s time to repot them.

Yes, you do not need to remove the plant from the pot. The pot is made from plant fibres so the seedling roots can easily grow through the sides and the bottom of the pot.

You could use a small amount of natural pesticide to protect your plants. Pesticides should only be applied by adults, remember to read the instructions carefully.

No, just as long as it has drainage holes.

If your seedling has grown taller than the Woolworths Discovery Garden pot, or if its growth has started to slow down slightly, it’s likely ready to find a bigger and better home.

This will vary depending on the size of your plant, as well as how big it’s expected to grow. Opt for a sizable item that will allow your plant to continue to develop and remember, you can always repot your plant again in the future if it requires a bigger home.
