Meet the Bricks Farm Farmer
Our farmers oversee fruit and veg from planting to harvest, and supply them to Woolworths for Australian families to enjoy.
Read full article >Hi, I’m one of Woolworths’ fruit and vegetable buyers. Sounds funny, right? But I don’t literally buy fruit and vegetables from our stores as a job (although that would be nice!). My role is to make sure all Woolworths stores have the right amount of seasonal produce, and that it’s the best value it can be for our customers.
There are different buyers for all kinds of fruit and vegetables at Woolworths, and each buyer has their own category to support. I look after carrots, onions and potatoes, but another may look after apples and pears. We take our fruit and veg very seriously here, but we have a lot of fun while doing it.
I work closely with farmers and growers, often speaking to them daily, to keep on top of any wins or losses that may affect the fruit or veg. For example, there may be a weather event that leads to a larger supply of carrots. Sometimes, this can mean more fruit and veg for our customers.
I also work with Woolworths’ agronomists. Together, we assess any upcoming challenges or opportunities, such as an extra supply of carrots, and make sure the best quality produce ends up in our stores.
No two work days are the same, which is why I love my role, but we do confirm every day how much fruit and veg our stores have and order more if needed. I always make time to speak to our growers and farmers; it’s important to have a strong relationship with them. And of course, we’re always working together to get the best fruit and veg at the best value for our customers.
I’m really proud to say that all of Woolworths’ fresh carrots and onions are 100% Australian grown. Ensuring quality and freshness and supporting local communities
Before I go, here’s a fun fact for you: Woolworths sells around 48,000 tonnes of carrots per year – that's about 85 Airbus A380s!
