  • 1 lemon, juice only
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 pinch freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 large apples
  • 4 celery sticks, thinly sliced
  • 25 red seedless grapes, halved
  • 60grams mayonnaise
  • 2 romaine lettuce
  • 2tablespoons walnuts

Description

Created at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York, this salad has been a favourite for over 100 years.

Method

Step 1 of 3

Remove the cores of the apples by using a corer. Then, using a sharp knife, cut the apples into slices of an even thickness. Stack the slices, a few at a time, and cut lengthways through the pile and then crossways, making equal-sized cubes.

Step 2 of 3

Put the apples, celery, grapes, and walnuts in a bowl. Add the mayonnaise and lemon juice and toss well to combine. Season to taste.

Step 3 of 3

Roughly chop the lettuce and divide between 4 plates. Serve the fruit and nut mixture on each bed of lettuce with a squeeze of lemon.
