Batlow, NSW
Family farm growing organic berries for Australia and beyond

N&A Group

Ardrossan Orchards is a family owned and operated orchard located in the Batlow region in NSW. Since 1956, Ardrossan Orchards and its parent company the N&A Group, have been owned and operated by the Cathels family. Three generations later they continue to grow and source both conventional and organic produce including organic apples and berries including blueberries, blackberries and raspberries.

The N&A Group will be using Woolworths Organic Growth Fund support to purchase protective covers for organic in-conversion blackberry production to increase the reliability of crops by reducing the impact of heat as well as controlling pests and birds. Through protected cropping, they will significantly improve the ability to produce more sustainable and consistent premium organic berries for Australian and export markets, whilst also securing employment continuity for the horticultural community.

As the first in the Batlow district to grow organically, they have been responsible for setting precedent and encouraging others to take the same path. They decided to diversify into organics in 2015 due to several factors including the increasing demand for organic produce in the Australian market, the purchase of a new farm that would allow them to further expand their growing capabilities, and as a result knowledge of organic growing practices acquired during several trips to the northern hemisphere to investigate new varieties.

“Woolworths is an expertly managed retailer with an exciting vision for the organic category. They are the market leader in the supply of organic produce (household consumer sector as by Nielsen Homescan™) and therefore they are able to give their suppliers a solid market base to grow for,” Ian said.

The N&A Group is excited about the potential growth and value of organics for both producers and consumers alike and would encourage other producers to apply.
