CHERRIES

Cherries

Glossy red cherries are an Australian summer favourite. Their deep red skin and sweet juicy flesh mean they both look and taste great. Enjoy cherries on their own, or cooked in desserts, cakes, jams and chutneys. They’re available in Woolworths between June and August, and again between October and January.

To Buy

Look for bright red, shiny-skinned cherries. Their stems should be intact, and they should feel slightly heavy for their size. Avoid any soft or wrinkled looking cherries.

To Store

Store cherries in the fridge for 4 to 5 days. Remove from the fridge 30 minutes before serving, as their flavour is enhanced when they are at room temperature.

To Prepare

Wash cherries with their stalks still on (this prevents water from penetrating the fruit). Serve as they are, or remove stalks and stones if using in cooking. Cherry stoners can be purchased from kitchen and homeware stores.

Quick ideas with CHERRIES

  1. For an impressive dessert for entertaining, beat 2 eggwhites to soft peaks then slowly add ½ cup caster sugar, continuing to beat until meringue is thick and glossy. Holding cherries by their stems, dip into meringue. Bake until just golden.
  2. For a fresh summer breakfast, serve cherries on top of thick natural yoghurt. Sprinkle with toasted muesli and drizzle with a little honey.
  3. For a great accompaniment to ham or turkey, cook pitted cherries in a little caster sugar, water and orange juice until soft. Serve as a chutney.

Nutritional Information:
