CHAMPAGNE MELONS

Champagne melons have a sweet and refreshing taste that’s great as a fresh treat. They’re usually slightly oval in shape, with pale-green skin, striped with darker green. Their flesh is a pale golden colour, with a crisp texture like that of watermelon, and medium-sized black seeds. Available between July and December, champagne melons are great eaten fresh from store on their own or in salads, or juiced to make refreshing drinks.

Look for champagne melons with hard skins. They should feel relatively heavy for their size, with a pleasant aroma.
To Store
Store whole champagne melons at room temperature for up to 1 week. Once cut, wrap in plastic and store in the fridge for up to 3 days.
To Prepare
Cut champagne melon into wedges and enjoy straight away. Alternatively, cut in half then peel away the skin, remove the seeds and dice or slice as required.
Quick ideas with CHAMPAGNE MELONS
- For a fresh dessert, peel and cut ½ champagne melon into cubes. Repeat with ½ rockmelon. Toss together with orange zest and mint leaves then serve topped with natural yoghurt.
- For a fresh summer slushy, peel and remove seeds from a champagne melon. Blend flesh together with ½ cup fresh orange juice and ½ cup fresh lemon juice. Sweeten with a little honey, if desired, then freeze until firm. Scoop into glasses and serve.
- For a fresh fruit salad, peel and cut a champagne melon into cubes. Combine with halved strawberries and green grapes. Drizzle with a little lime juice and honey before serving.
