BOYSENBERRIES

Boysenberries

Boysenberries were developed by crossing different strains of blackberries, loganberries and raspberries. They are large, dark maroon berries with very fine hairs. Juicy and sweet-tart in flavour, boysenberries are very soft, and deteriorate quickly. Available between December and February, they’re great eaten fresh, or used to make pies, tarts and jams

To Buy

Look for slightly soft berries, with a deep maroon colour.

To Store

Boysenberries should ideally be used as soon as possible after purchasing. Once home, remove from their punnet and transfer to a paper towel-lined plate. Cover with plastic wrap and store in the fridge until ready to eat or cook with.

To Prepare

Boysenberries don’t require any preparation. If they have been in the fridge, remove 30 minutes before using as their flavour is best when they are at room temperature

Quick ideas with BOYSENBERRIES

  1. For a quick summer dessert, combine boysenberries, blueberries and sliced strawberries. Top with thick vanilla yoghurt and sprinkle with toasted almond flakes.
  2. For a fresh breakfast idea, cook cubed granny smith apples in a little lemon juice and caster sugar until softened. Toss through boysenberries and serve over cereal or with yoghurt.
  3. For a fresh dessert for entertaining, halve peaches and sprinkle with brown sugar then grill until golden. Place a peach half onto each serving plate and pile over boysenberries. Serve garnished with mint leaves.
