First regional shopping centre opens

On 7 October 1964 Woolworths opened its first wholly sponsored and developed regional shopping centre - Jesmond Centre, near Newcastle, NSW.

The 12 acre $2 million project included Woolworths first BIG W Department Store, specialty shops and extensive car parking.

The centre was followed by others in Kotara, Liverpool, Rockhampton and Sundale on the Gold Coast
